Adapt and Overcome

A Marine who just lost everthing in an apartment fire in Hickory said it, “Adapt and Overcome.”
It’s the unofficial mantra of the Marines.  I like it.  I’m going to use it.
I’ll write more tonight.  Now I’m on my way to meet my friend Amy for dinner.

Changing Lives $10 At a Time

Can lives really be changed by a loan for as little as $10?
They absolutely can.  A group called African Women’s Initiatives is empowering women in incredible ways through a micro-finance project.
My dear, passionate, amazing friend Sherry Roese just got back from a trip to the Congo with AWI.

90 Second Weekend Update

24 Hours of Booty – so far has raised more than $918,000 to fund cancer research and support to the Lance Armstrong Foundation and other local charities.
And it’s going national – the first “Booty” outside Charlotte happens this September in Columbia, Maryland.  Wow.  And it all started right here.  Incredible work!

Lance Armstrong and Anne Lynn

Anne Lynn is one of the most ALIVE people I’ve ever met.
This Charlotte mother of four had recently completed a dream of competing in an Ironman Triathlon when she got the most devastating news.
Lung Cancer.  Stage Four.
She was just 40 years old.
Anne is 43 now, and still fighting this disease with [...]

Dancing Your Way to Better Health

I’m celebrating a birthday this weekend, and want you to join me!
I’ll be judging a “Dancing Like the Stars” event Saturday evening at the Charlotte Museum of History.
Proceeds will benefit the Lionel Lee Junior Center for Wellness.  The center helps our neighbors who can’t afford to pay for health care.  They’re accepting $10 donations per [...]

Ride to Work Day

If 100 MPG sounds good to you, maybe it’s time to join the growing number of people trading in their SUV’s for scooters, motorcycles, and three-wheelers.
CPCC offers a Motorcycle Training Course for beginning riders, and there’s even a street skills course specifically for women.
And by the way, Happy Ride to Work Day.

The 100 Thing Challenge

Could you do it?
Pare down your life to just 100 things?
Americans have way too much stuff, and I am no exception.
A 37-year-old San Diego man looked around his home last summer and realized just how much his “stuff” was weighing him down.  Read more on David Michael Bruno’s blog here.
I’ve started my list.  This is going [...]

An Ideal Husband

I LOVE the Sunday edition of the New York Times.  It’s always full of excellent, deeply-sourced stories that get my mind in gear for the work-week.  But my Sundays are so busy now with family and church I can’t seem to make time for this indulgence.  Besides, for the price, (5 bucks for the Sunday [...]

Get Out and Read!

More research tonight shows reading and interacting with your baby now can chase away behavioral problems in the future.
Researchers say a close mother/infant relationship can also make it easier for kids to learn languages and socialize.
The study even found some benefits to mothers taking their babies out of the house.
   It can [...]

Is Sunscreen a Scam?

So when you slather on sunscreen this weekend, how well will it work?
New research claims four out of five brand name sunscreens are ineffective.
In fact, the Environmental Working Group claims the top-selling brands are the poorest performers, with NONE of the market’s leading sunscreen products making the grade for effectiveness and protection against BOTH UVA [...]
